november listings

November 3, 2008

hello,

This might be the last bit of listings you get from us for a while, as
Flatpack madness starts to take over. Below are a bunch of Birmingham-
and film-related things going on in November. Firstly, our news…

FLATPACK INTERNSHIPS
As you might know, Flatpack Festival 3 is happening in March next year.
We’re currently advertising for two part-time interns to work on festival
planning between November and January. One Festival Assistant, and
one Web Editor. Deadline for applications is tomorrow, job specs here:
http://www.flatpackfestival.org/blog/2008/10/22/internships/
There will be plenty of volunteering opportunities too; watch this space.
And don’t forget that shorts submissions close on 5 December.

WORCESTERSHIRE ON FILM
Our archive tour closes on 22 November with a matinee show at
Number 8 in Pershore and a gala screening at Worcester Guild Hall.
At the Worcester screening the silent material will include live piano
accompaniment by Alcyona.

7INCH no.35 :: HOUSEWIVES’ CHOICE
Our next Hare and Hounds event is on 30 November and features a
selection of shorts, adverts and propaganda from the BFI archive, giving
a window on the world of the British housewife between the 20s and 50s.
Includes tips on the perfect rabbit pie, and music to scrub the floor to
courtesy of Sugarfoot Stomp.

7inch october listings

October 8, 2008

Hello,

Slightly belated listings for you this month – though I suppose we always
say that. For those of you new to this list, 7 Inch Cinema send out semi-
regular information on things you might be interested in, mostly film- or
Birmingham-related. Firstly, a wee 7inch update…

WORCESTERSHIRE ON FILM
We are about a third of the way through the tour, having so far visited
people in Kidderminster, Redditch and Evesham and rocked their world.
Next up, Tenbury Wells tonight. There is an itinerary and photo diary on
the projects page.

THE FABULOUS ANIMATION OF WLADYSLAW STAREWICZ
Sunday 26 October at the Library Theatre in B’ham
Bizarre and lovely stop-frame animation from the 20s and 30s,
presented by collector Dennis Nyback in association with Birmingham
International Film Society.

…Then back at the Hare and Hounds on Sunday 30 November for
archive programme  HOUSEWIVES’ CHOICE, with special guests
Sugarfoot Stomp. By the way, if you failed to pick up the new Pram
DVD ‘Shadow Shows of the Phantascope’ at our recent launch you can now get it online.

FLATPACK FESTIVAL 3
Yes, it is beginning to rumble on the horizon. Venues are getting fixed
up, wishlists scribbled on napkins and websites rejiggled. For now,
here are the dates:
11-15 March, 2009.
Birmingham, UK.
Hubba hubba!

7inch september listings

September 5, 2008

hello,
I remember someone saying that the start of the academic year
was the best time for new resolutions, and we are springing into
the autumn with high hopes and blank canvases (or is that blank
expressions?). And plenty of gigs as usual.

7INCH NEWS
A couple of weeks ago we went up to Nairn for the delightful
Ballerina Ballroom Cinema of Dreams; a writeup can be found on
the 7inch site. On returning we vacated our attic office and shunted
everything into a new office at the Custard Factory; please note the
new address at the end of this mail, and the blood blister on the
end of my finger caused by incompetent shelf construction. Now
we are limbering up for Flatpack III, which hits Birmingham in
mid-March 2009. But before then…

7inch May listings

May 8, 2008

hello,

It’s that busy time of year, so our listings are extra patchy
this month – but we hope you find some things here of interest.
Firstly, 7inch-related news…

7INCH no.32 :: folk special

Our last Kings Heath event for a while includes a lovely

the film and some other early adventures in documentary.
(Including an important role in pulling together a
10-camera record of the 1958 CND march on Aldermaston.)
Plus assorted folky clips, musical interludes and shorts.

We’ve also done a little interview with Derrick Knight.

New 7inch site

April 16, 2008

Phew. After many hours of wading through our archives and solving lots of niggly little problems, we have a new website. And the fact that I keep going back through it to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ is a good sign I think. If you go visit you’ll notice that there’s a news page which looks suspiciously blog-like, and that’s how we hope to use it. This will continue to be a dumping-ground for our listings emails for now, but if you want to be kept fully informed of 7inch goings-on then 7inch.org is the place to go…

April listings, the Divine Edgar

April 7, 2008

Hello,

Please find below a rapid canter through some things
happening around Birmingham over the next few weeks. First
though, an important notice…

THE DIVINE EDGAR
at FIERCE FESTIVAL 2008
Anyone who came to the 7inch Halloween or Christmas events
last year will know a little about this unique horizontal
ghost-train ride of an installation. While we were setting
up at Highbury Hall one of the ladies working there asked
if she could try out The Divine Edgar, and the cackles of
glee and screams of terror which emanated from the next
room were a joy to behold.

Anyway, Edgar needs your votes. It is currently hovering
outside the top 3 in contention for a place in the
‘Unconventional Spaces’ programme at this year’s Fierce
Festival. How much more unconventional can you get than a
coffin? Voting closes on 11 April, and you’re allowed to
vote each day – so as Mr Capone said, vote early and vote
often…

March listings

March 7, 2008

Blimey, it’s all going on at the moment. For a start we are
on the brink of launching a new 7inch website (just as long
as our web designer doesn’t strangle us first). The old site
has served us extremely well, but we felt it needed a bit
of a springclean and we hope you enjoy our new direction…
There is also a shedload of exciting gigs and projects coming
up over the next few months, and remarkably enough 7inch is
nearly five years old. More info soon, but in the meantime:

7INCH no.30
JACK STEVENSON presents:
STRANGE MAGIC
Sunday 23 March, from 7pm
At the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath

Globetrotting film collector and writer Jack Stevenson had
a memorable one-night stand with us at the Rainbow a couple
of years ago, presenting a wonderful show of Elvis-related
obscurities. This time he is bringing his own very personal

Heyup,

It has been a while, but here are some film-related things
happening around Birmingham over the next few weeks.

7INCH NEWS

filmnights throughout the spring, kicking off with:

Sunday 24 Feb, 7pm at the Hare and Hounds

The 7inch site also has info on other forthcoming dates,
including a screening of I For India and a visit in March
by underground film don Mr Jack Stevenson. And a big thank
you to all who submitted to our DIY Flipbook Challenge.
We’ve extended the deadline, so if you want to see your

postits and get your animation to the address at the bottom
of this email by Tuesday 19 Feb. All the results will be shown

[  By the way, if you are an 8mm fan the submissions
deadline for Cambridge Super 8 Fest is next week:
