7inch May listings

May 8, 2008

hello,

It’s that busy time of year, so our listings are extra patchy
this month - but we hope you find some things here of interest.
Firstly, 7inch-related news…

Next 7inch event::
Sunday 18 May, 7pm
at the Hare and Hounds, Kings Heath B14 7JZ
7INCH no.32 :: folk special
featuring TRAVELLING FOR A LIVING

Our last Kings Heath event for a while includes a lovely
film from 1965 about Hull’s Waterson family; singing,
talking and drinking lots of tea. The director Derrick
Knight will be our guest, recounting his experiences making
the film and some other early adventures in documentary.
(Including an important role in pulling together a
10-camera record of the 1958 CND march on Aldermaston.)
Plus assorted folky clips, musical interludes and shorts.
£4 on the door.

We’ve also done a little interview with Derrick Knight.

New 7inch site

April 16, 2008

Phew. After many hours of wading through our archives and solving lots of niggly little problems, we have a new website. And the fact that I keep going back through it to ‘ooh’ and ‘aah’ is a good sign I think. If you go visit you’ll notice that there’s a news page which looks suspiciously blog-like, and that’s how we hope to use it. This will continue to be a dumping-ground for our listings emails for now, but if you want to be kept fully informed of 7inch goings-on then 7inch.org is the place to go…

April listings, the Divine Edgar

April 7, 2008

Hello,

Please find below a rapid canter through some things
happening around Birmingham over the next few weeks. First
though, an important notice…

THE DIVINE EDGAR
at FIERCE FESTIVAL 2008
Anyone who came to the 7inch Halloween or Christmas events
last year will know a little about this unique horizontal
ghost-train ride of an installation. While we were setting
up at Highbury Hall one of the ladies working there asked
if she could try out The Divine Edgar, and the cackles of
glee and screams of terror which emanated from the next
room were a joy to behold.

Anyway, Edgar needs your votes. It is currently hovering
outside the top 3 in contention for a place in the
‘Unconventional Spaces’ programme at this year’s Fierce
Festival. How much more unconventional can you get than a
coffin? Voting closes on 11 April, and you’re allowed to
vote each day – so as Mr Capone said, vote early and vote
often…

March listings

March 7, 2008

Blimey, it’s all going on at the moment. For a start we are
on the brink of launching a new 7inch website (just as long
as our web designer doesn’t strangle us first). The old site
has served us extremely well, but we felt it needed a bit
of a springclean and we hope you enjoy our new direction…
There is also a shedload of exciting gigs and projects coming
up over the next few months, and remarkably enough 7inch is
nearly five years old. More info soon, but in the meantime:

7INCH no.30
JACK STEVENSON presents:
STRANGE MAGIC
Sunday 23 March, from 7pm
At the Hare and Hounds in Kings Heath

Globetrotting film collector and writer Jack Stevenson had
a memorable one-night stand with us at the Rainbow a couple
of years ago, presenting a wonderful show of Elvis-related
obscurities. This time he is bringing his own very personal

December listings

December 3, 2007

Hello,

This month’s listings come in fingerless gloves. Firstly a
reminder about our Christmas special next week, and another
dvd giveaway…

7 Inch Cinema present:
CHRISTMAS GHOST STORIES
Weds 12 December, 7.30pm at Highbury Hall, Moseley
The Cambridge scholar MR James dreamed up his tales of
gloomy cloisters and desolate beaches as a way of giving
friends the heebie-jeebies at Christmas, and has influenced
countless writers of suspense since. During the 70s the BBC
branded many a young, impressionable mind with a series of
spine-chilling James adaptations, and for this very special
festive one-off we’ll be dusting off two of the best: A
Warning to the Curious and Whistle and I’ll Come to You.
There will also be a selection of shorts, sundry DJs, audio
reworkings of a couple of Michael Hordern readings by
Nicholas Bullen (Black Galaxy) and another chance to
experience The Divine Edgar, the filmficciones installation
unveiled at our Ikon Halloween event. And if all that gets
too much for you we’ll keep the fire going in the bar.

Tickets: £7 advance / £8 on the night
Available from Swordfish, Jibbering and Polar Bear records
from 5 December.
Or via paypal to flatpack[at]7inch.org for £7 + 50p postage.

Venue: Highbury Hall, Yew Tree Road, Moseley, Bham B13 8QG
Commissioned by Birmingham MP Joseph Chamberlain as his
‘country retreat’, Highbury can be found tucked behind the
Britannic Assurance building near where Russell Road meets
Queensbridge Road.

Council info

Win! A dvd of A WARNING TO THE CURIOUS (Dir: L.G.Clark,
1972), generously donated by the BFI. And! A free ticket to
the Ghost Stories event.
Just answer this question correctly:
Q] Who wrote a song inspired by MR James entitled Spectre
vs Rector?
Answers to info[at]7inch.org.uk by Friday 7 December. The
winner will be informed on Monday 10 Dec.
